  • Corruption and Incompetence in the National ESL

Seeking an organized venue for League of Legends beyond Riot's ranked play system, OPP recently joined the National ESL's 5v5 ladder. With four of our first five matches against fairly well ranked teams resulting in our opponents completely no-showing, we were already doubting the legitimacy of this league.

Corruption, cheating, and partial admins have long been a part of online gaming leagues, and ESL is apparently no different. We were scheduled against top-ranked team Bear Stance Gaming for a Friday night match. Throughout the week, we attempted to contact various members of BSG, both through the ESL's onsite matchmaking system and LoL ingame friends list, with no success. A few minutes after game time, OPP member Fats finally got ahold of one of the members of BSG, who had this to say:

After waiting 30 minutes to guarantee no more members of BSG were going to be present, we played a scrimmage against DrRegulus and some other friends, which he also invited several of the BSG roster members to. Again, none of them accepted.

After 12 am, BSG team captain thyAshes contacted us and began an expletive-filled rant about how his entire team was online at the designated match time and that they would challenge our posting them as a no-show. He then went on to claim DrRegulus is not a member of his team, and a "second string player," even though he was clearly listed on the match roster posted by thyAshes himself (since deleted by ESL admins).

We had faith in the ESL protest system, and felt confident that our screenshots, combined with the corroborating statements of DrRegulus and complete absense of his teammates in the ESL onsite match setup chat would put these twinks in their place.

Unfortunately, ESL admin "FLG Caboose" has reading comprehension issues, and could not follow our clear explanation, multiple images with a BSG member WHO WAS LISTED AS A STARTING ROSTER MEMBER admitting his team was no longer active and definitely not online. His decision? To delete the entire match, taking zero punative action against BSG for their immoral actions and flying in the face of all reason, not to mention ESL rules.

As of this time, OPP has officially withdrawn from the National ESL ladders, and will not endorse or embrace them in any form.
